Chapter Nine

Jerry reached across the console and placed his hand on April’s arm.

She opened her eyes and raised the seat she’d been sleeping in. “Is it time for me to drive?”

“No. We are almost there.”

“You were supposed to wake me.”

“I wasn’t tired. Besides, you were sleeping so soundly that your snores helped keep me awake.”

“Very funny. How much longer?”

“About ten miles. I thought you might like to get your wits about you before we get there.”

April yawned and stretched her arms. “What I’d like is a shower.”

“Knowing my mother, she already has a bath ready for you. What was that look for?” Jerry asked when April frowned.

“Nothing.”

“Not nothing, and I’m too tired to guess. Tell me.”

April stared out the window as she spoke. “You said your parents bought the place so it would have enough room when we come visit. They painted a room specifically for Max, and now you expect your mother has already run me a bath.”

“Yes?”

“Your parents sound great, and yet the way you talk, you barely saw them when you were a kid. How can they be nurturing and uncaring at the same time? I don’t care how much my kid liked my parents, I wouldn’t allow her to live with them if I was alive and well.”

“I got to see my parents anytime I wanted. My mother and I have always been okay, but my pop and I got along better when our time was limited. I was a difficult kid.”

“You were a kid. All kids are difficult.”

Jerry slowed for a red light. “Not all kids talk to spirits and have insight into the future.”

“Max does, and I didn’t throw her away.”

“My parents didn’t throw me away. I’m not saying they did the right thing, but it was better than living in a house where everyone was constantly walking on eggshells. At least when I was at Granny’s, she encouraged me to be who I was. So, I just started staying with her, and no one seemed to mind.” Jerry glanced in the mirror. Though his grandmother was listening, she made no move to join in the conversation. The light turned green. Jerry pressed on the gas. “What’s this really about?”

“I guess I’m just scared they won’t like us.”

Now, they were getting somewhere. He lowered his voice to a whisper. “You’re worried about them not liking Max because she’s like me.”

April nodded.

“It took some time, but my parents have learned to accept me for who I am. I’ve told them all about Max. They can’t wait to meet you both. When they do, I promise they will adore you both just as much as I do.”

“And if they don’t?” April’s voice was barely above a whisper.

“Then we will leave. I’m serious about that. If at any point you don’t feel welcome, just say the word, and we’ll pack up and go. Okay?”

April nodded. “Okay, Jerry.”

“Good. How about waking Max so she can officially meet her grandparents.”

April giggled. “They aren’t officially her grandparents yet.”

Jerry smiled as he turned onto his parents’ street.
